Description

The Reverend David Rees memorial is located at Bethlehem Baptist chapel and consists of a large slate plaque set within a carved sandstone surround. This entire structure is framed by two large squared stone piers. Each pier features a plinth with a slate course that extends across, along with shafts that have a bull-nosed slate string course at the top of the plaque, also extending across. The piers are topped with a moulded slate cornice, which serves as the base of a pediment, and a moulded top that steps up to a ball finial.

Between the piers, there is a plinth slate plaque with moulded slate sides, inscribed with the Welsh text: "Llafuriodd ynddiwyd yn ngwinllan ei Dduw;/ Gyfranodd yn helaeth o'i feddiant tra'n fyw;/ Gwr Doniol a Duwiol, rhagorol oedd EF:/ Mawr ydyw ei wynfyd, ynghanol y Nef., and: J. James Llanychare." The main plaque has sandstone jambs, featuring outer fluting and inner reeding, which is chamfered at the top. This plaque includes a lengthy inscription dedicated to Rev. David Rees of Froghole. The bull-nose top course is stepped back over the plaque.

Above the main plaque is a slate plaque framed in cut stone, designed with a pedimental shape that has an undulating curve rather than a triangular form. The surround is moulded and features incised six-pointed flowers in the spandrels. The plaque also has incised open books. The moulded top cornice of slate is set back from the outer piers, beneath a triangular pediment of sandstone that is inscribed with a crude winged angel-head. The rear of the memorial is made of cut stone with raised outer piers and three slate courses across.
