Description
26 High Street is a terraced house and shops dating from the 19th century, featuring painted stucco and three storeys with three wide bays topped by a parapet. The ground floor has been significantly altered, but the central six-panel door remains in its original position, accessed by two stone steps and accompanied by a bootscraper. The first floor showcases three large tripartite sash windows with 4-12-4 panes; the sidelights are very narrow and set within broad segmental-headed recesses, with four narrow recessed strips alternating with the windows. The recess on the extreme right has a moulded stone base of a pilaster, indicating that there may have been more elaborate detailing originally. The top floor includes a similar central sash and large 12-pane horned sashes in the outer bays. The outer bays are recessed, creating a raised center and outer piers, with the top band stepping forward over the center and piers, while the parapet is also stepped. The two late 20th-century shops feature a stepped parapet above the fascia level, supported by five posts carrying metal rails in front of the first-floor windows, with some original details possibly hidden beneath.
At the rear, there is a gable with a slightly lower gabled wing that has triple sashes on the upper floors and stair lights in a lean-to on the left side. The interior of the ground floor has been modified for use as two shops, but the traceried overlight of the original front door, a fanlight with radiating bars within a rectangle, is still visible from inside. The room to the right retains a cornice and one original six-panel door. At the rear, there is a staircase dating from around 1840, featuring a continuous thin rail that rises around a narrow triangular well, with scrolled tread ends, comprising four flights up and one down to the basement.
