Description
Rhydwilym Baptist Chapel is a rubble-stone chapel dating from the 19th century, featuring a slate roof with bracketed eaves. The gable-end front showcases rock-faced quoins and dressings. It has round-headed windows that are margin-lit small-pane horned sashes. The central round-headed doorway is flanked by panelled double doors and topped with a radial-glazed overlight. Above the doorway, there are two narrow windows that light the gallery, with larger windows on both the left and right sides. The gable also includes a blind oculus above an inscription tablet. The side walls, with the left side being slate-hung, contain two large windows, and a similar pair is located at the rear.
Upon entering, doors lead to a lobby featuring open wooden stairs on each side. Four-panelled doors provide access to the main body of the chapel, situated beside a window with coloured glass. Above this window is an 18th-century plaque from the earlier chapel that commemorates its foundation by John Evans. Inside, the main chapel boasts a ribbed and diapered flat ceiling, although the ceiling rose was removed in the 1930s. The windows are adorned with hood moulds. The three-sided gallery has a panelled wooden front and is supported by iron columns from "T JONES PRIORY FOUNDRY CARMARTHEN." The chapel contains three banks of pine pews, and the pulpit features flanking stairs with turned balusters, along with a reredos that has a broken segmental pediment on Ionic columns with simulated granite shafts.
