Description
Zoar Baptist Chapel is a square building dating from the 19th century, featuring gables on the front (east) and rear. The exterior is rough-cast with smooth strips at the corners, topped with a slate roof that has a tile ridge and timber bargeboards. The entrance porch is located against a plain north wall. On the east front, there are two windows with Tudor-arched heads, consisting of fixed lights with 12 panes plus six in the head, the latter made of coloured glass, while the bottom panes are obscured glass. The rear side has two plain high-level windows with top opening lights. A very small name plaque is set into the front gable.
To the south of the chapel is a room or cottage that extends under the continuation of the south roof slope, featuring two four-pane sash windows and a central door, with a chimney on the left.
Inside the chapel, double two-panel doors lead from the porch into a striking interior with steeply ramped pews. The pews are designed with a very upright style, short seats, and vertical backs, arranged in seven rows. The woodwork is simply framed and paneled, with a tiny additional shelf beneath the seats, all painted using a scumbled technique. The centre pew at the front has an open back with inch-square balusters. The pulpit is positioned between the east windows, accessible by a flight of three steps, and has a slight wall recess for the preacher. Pews are located on each side of the pulpit. An American Organ is situated in the corner. From the chapel, a door leads down four steps to the annexe, which is a single long room with a fireplace at each end.
It is noted that there is a place for open-air immersion baptism in the adjacent woods, likely referring to the oblong well marked on maps, located about 50 meters south of the chapel.
