Description
Wellington House is a commercial building with residential flats above, dating from the late 19th century and constructed with a painted stucco facade. The four-story street front features a parapet and is divided into three bays. The windows are small-paned sash windows; the upper windows are square six-pane, the second floor has three windows with sixteen panes each, and the first floor has two windows with twenty panes each. A late 19th-century oriel window is located to the left of the first-floor windows, featuring two, four, and two panes respectively, with a moulded cornice. The ground floor has a shopfront, largely or entirely reconstructed in the late 20th century, in a late 19th-century style. A deeply projecting fascia includes three roll-topped, fluted brackets, outer fluted piers, and a plate glass shop window with curved glass panels on each side of a deeply recessed central entry. A door is located on the extreme left for access to the upper flats. A cast-iron column, aligned with a fascia bracket above, marks the central entryway, with doors leading to further rooms on either side, but the shop premises are single. The rear elevation, facing Crackwell Street, is set back from the rear of number 20 and features a two-story, three-bay lean-to extension with four-pane sashes and a central door with an overlight. The wall above the lean-to shows that the original building was designed as two separate premises, with two twelve-pane sashes on the second floor and one eight-pane sash on the top floor to the left.
