Description

Cresswell Bridge is a bridge made of uncoursed hammer-dressed masonry using local sandstone. It features two low segmental arches, each with a span of about 5 meters, and has cutwaters on both the upstream and downstream sides. The voussoirs of the arches are deep and rough. The bridge crosses the stream at an angle of about 30 degrees. Above the cutwaters, there are pedestrian refuges, with additional corbelling on the downstream side to support them. Some of the masonry on the downstream side appears to be a repair made with a different type of stone.

The entire bridge, including its long northern approach, measures about 100 meters in length and is 3.6 meters wide between the parapets. The road is elevated above the adjacent fields to ensure it remains clear of the water level during spring high tides.

The bridge parapets feature upright coping stones that are weathered outwards, with bond-stones integrated into the mass of the parapets at intervals. There is also a stile and steps leading down to the right bank below the bridge.
