Description
China Cottage is a converted cottage range dating from the 18th century, featuring painted roughcast walls and a slate close-eaved roof. The building has a long, irregular front with seven bays, most of which have been fitted with renewed four-pane sash windows.
Starting from the left, the first and second bays each contain a sash window on both floors, with the second floor window on the second bay being slightly longer than the one on the left. A plaque dated 1723 was placed here in 1977. The third and fourth bays have small square windows located under the eaves, above a door and a small sash window. The fifth bay includes a sash window on each floor, with a reproduction date plaque positioned to the right.
The last two bays are slightly angled and feature two hornless nine-pane sashes above a bowed 25-pane shop window with a fascia, which appears to be from the early 19th century, although the glazing bars may have been renewed. There is also a half-glazed door. The shop at the right end has been modernised, and the stairs to the floor above have been removed; access to this floor is now from the main house.
