Description

Nolton Chapel is a chapel built from Nolton sandstone, featuring ashlar stone at the front and rubble stone on the sides, topped with a slate roof. The gable facade is designed in a classical style, showcasing giant pilasters, a moulded entablature, and a coped gable pediment. The pilasters have moulded bases and caps, while the entablature is deep but lacks a projecting cornice. At the outer ends of the facade are two triangular finial blocks, and the pediment has a thin verge moulding. Between the pilasters are three tall arched recesses; the outer recesses contain long arched windows with stone sills and marginal glazing bars. The center features an inset slate plaque that reads "Nolton Chapel 1858," flanked by square rebated half-circles above and below. The arched central doorway has a four-panel door and a fanlight with marginal glazing bars.

The sides of the chapel have similar long windows, with three on the north side and one on the south. The stonework shows signs of deep erosion. Attached to the rear is a chapel house, which includes a north door and a one-window range, with stone voussoirs above the ground floor openings. A small chimneystack is located at the right end, along with a coped gable.

Inside, the chapel features a coved ceiling with an ornate plaster rose at the center. There is a plaster arch behind the pulpit, which has a canted front and cast-iron scrolled panels on the sides. Stairs with iron rails lead up to the pulpit from each side. An end gallery is supported by timber columns, with timber panels between the pilasters, including two full columns and two half-columns.
