Description
Glendower Houses is a pair of houses, now converted into flats, featuring a plain stucco exterior facing The Norton. The building has a basement and four storeys, with four bays, a parapet, and end-wall stacks. The upper windows are square, while the other floors have longer sash windows, all of which are 4-pane horned sashes, except for four windows that have been altered to narrow sashes. These altered windows are located on the top floor's two centre windows, the second from the left on the second floor, and the right window on the first floor.
The two centre doorways are positioned closely together but do not align with the windows above. Both doorways are arched and framed by open pedimented timber doorcases. A single wide flight of steps leads to the doorways, which are flanked by iron railings. The doorcases feature fluted piers with square rosettes above, supported by consoles that carry the open pediments. The reveals are panelled with a moulded impost band beneath radiating-bar fanlights, and the doors are from the 20th century. There are basement steps to the right, with doors located under the front steps. The 19th-century railings that enclosed a front garden, mentioned in the 1977 listing, have been removed.
The side walls are also stuccoed. At the rear, facing The Croft, the building has a parapet and two dormers, presenting a similar plain four-storey, four-bay elevation with horned 4-pane sashes. The ground floor features a sash window in the left bay only, while the rest are obscured by a mid-20th-century three-bay addition, which is part of the range between Glendower Houses and Croft House. This addition houses the Tourist Information Centre, while the linking range contains the Ocean Cafe. The addition is painted stucco with a parapet, and the bays are divided by pilaster strips, featuring small-paned windows in pairs and double doors.
