Description
The Gables is a large villa built in the Tudor Gothic style, featuring white-painted stucco and steep slate roofs with deep eaves and decorative bargeboards. The building has timber mullioned and transomed windows with hoodmoulds, as well as casement windows with marginal glazing bars and top-lights consisting of two lights for each casement. It boasts five gables adorned with elaborate pierced bargeboards and pointed finials, including two of different sizes on the main wing that projects to the right, and three eaves gables on the left wing, now known as Gable End.
The Gables occupies the two projecting bays to the right, which contain the principal rooms. The north front features the largest gable to the left, accompanied by a rendered stack on the left side wall, and a smaller gable to the right. The first floor has two 3-light transomed windows, while the ground floor showcases two ornate Tudor-style canted bay windows with moulded cornices and Tudor-arched heads for both the casements and top-lights. The west end mirrors this arrangement, with a large gable to the left and a small gable to the right, including 3-light and 2-light upper windows, a plain tripartite 2-4-2-pane sash on the ground floor to the right, and a 20th-century stuccoed porch to the left.
Gable End, which occupies the set-back wing to the left, consists of three bays, with the right two being closely spaced. The first floor features three 2-light windows under the gables, while the ground floor has two large 3-light windows and a Tudor-arched door at the extreme right corner. This door has a moulded surround with panelled reveals and double half-glazed doors that are recessed within.
At the rear, there is a parallel range that creates a twin-gabled east end with bargeboards. The first floor has 3-light windows on both the right and left, and the ground floor to the left, while the right side includes a canted bay with 1-2-1 lights, featuring plainer top-lights. The rear wall has a similar 2-light window on the first floor to the left, along with a 20th-century window and porch below.
The interior is said to retain many original fittings, including the staircase and panelled doors.
