Description
The Grove Hotel is a Grade II listed building constructed from rubble stone with heavy Caerbwdy stone quoins. It features a hipped slate eaves roof adorned with painted timber, a mutulated eaves cornice, and brick stacks on the ridges of paired rear wings. The front elevation is two-storey with three windows, previously rendered and whitewashed, showcasing cambered brick heads above 12-pane sash windows and painted slate sills. The central entrance has a half-glazed door framed by a fine painted timber pedimented doorcase, which includes reeded pilasters and long brackets supporting the pediment. The door is complemented by panelled reveals and a traceried overlight.
The east side of the building is finished in painted stucco and features a one-window range of 12-pane sashes to the right. The rear wings have 20th-century additions on their inner faces, but the original pointed stair light remains visible in the center of the rear wall. The west side wall is constructed of rubble stone and includes a 12-pane sash window on each floor. There is also an L-plan rubble stone northwest rear wing with brick stacks located at the west, east, and north ends. The south front is two-storey with two windows, featuring 9-pane upper windows in brick surrounds and a 12-pane window to the ground floor on the right. A low addition at the west end has a grouted slate roof, a stone stack at the west end, and one 9-pane window at the front.
Inside, the entrance hall and southwest ground floor room have reeded ceiling borders, and there is a segmental-arched archway in the hall. The ground floor includes one six-panel door, while the staircase has been altered in the 19th century. Upstairs, some doors are two-panel with fielded panels.
