Description

The forecourt wall and monuments at the Cemetery Chapel consist of a curved retaining wall made of squared tooled grey limestone, featuring ashlar moulded coping. This wall encloses around 15 memorials that provide access to vaults.

From left to right, the memorials include: 1. A gabled coping over a gabled Gothic frame with heavy crockets, featuring a marble plaque with column shafts and a segmental-pointed cusped head, inscribed for Elizabeth Reed, who died in 1880. 2. A similar gabled coping over a gabled Gothic frame, made entirely of grey stone, commemorating William Lock (died 1874) and Jane Lock (died 1886). 3. An ashlar arched inset memorial with column shafts for Fanny Dyster (died 1877) and Dr F Dyster (died 1893). 4. A segmental-pointed gable over a similar-headed frame holding a Gothic cusped marble plaque for Emily Hennell (died 1869). 5. An ashlar Gothic gabled frame with an arched marble Gothic plaque for H Havard Jones (died 1864). 6. A segmental-pointed frame for a Gothic cusped plaque, similar to No. 4, made of grey stone with bi-colour voussoirs under a segmental-pointed coped head, for Sarah Higham (died 1864). 7. Similar to Nos 4 and 6, this memorial is for Harriet Hawtrey (died 1865). 8. A marble plaque set in an ashlar Gothic pilastered frame with a shallow stilted arch, dedicated to Mary White (died 1869). 9. An ashlar Gothic frame for a marble plaque commemorating John Phelps (died 1881). 10. Similar to Nos 4, 6, and 7, this is a marble cusped-headed plaque in a segmental-pointed surround for Benjamin Harris (died 1870). 11. A vault entry featuring a large Gothic gabled doorway with marble carved arms above and cast-iron gates made by the Sun Foundry in Glasgow, although the inscription around the opening is overgrown. 12. A segmental-pointed coping over a rope-moulded arched plaque for Thomas Waters (died 1890). 13. A segmental-pointed coping with a cross finial over a recessed marble Gothic plaque for Thomas Brook of The Croft Terrace (died 1898). 14. A segmental-pointed coping over a square-headed marble plaque in a rusticated surround for William Joseph of Weston Lodge (died 1921).

Behind the wall, the sloping bank is marked with grey stone lines indicating the divisions between the vaults.
