Description
The Midland Bank is an Edwardian classical building, two stories high with a three-bay front. The façade features channelled stonework with a polished granite plinth and is recessed in the center. A bracket and dentil cornice adorns the taller ground floor, topped by a broken segmental pediment below a stepped parapet, which is supported by paired Ionic-derived columns in antis. The parapet displays the Prince of Wales’ feathers and dragon panels, referencing its history as the 'Wales bank'.
The building has a dressed stone chimney stack and small pane sash windows on the top floor, which are horned and framed by lugged architraves decorated with foliage. Below, there are giant lugged architraves with arched heads and keystones, with small pane lunettes in each bay. The doorcase, which is pedimented, is offset to the left and features double panelled doors. Console bracket keystones are positioned over the central and right-hand four-light windows, which have swept-up transoms. The right side has been truncated due to the insertion of a cash dispenser.
The interior has been significantly altered, with an additional storey added to the former banking hall.
