Description

This is a group of ten houses, formerly an estate yard, dating from the 18th century. The layout consists of a detached range facing northwest, and a three-sided courtyard range.

The northwest range has a prominent central block with overhanging verges and a roundel in the gable. A tall archway, originally open, has been infilled with brickwork and a large lunette containing a modern door and windows. Flanking this central block are two-storey wings, originally with open timber frames facing the courtyard. These frames consisted of posts, horizontal members below lofts, and large angle braces at loft level; they have now been infilled with brickwork, incorporating a herringbone pattern in the upper levels, and modern windows. The rear walls are brick with raised outer angle piers. Modern glazing is present in two cambered-arched openings in each wing, and a cambered-headed window is in the northeast end wall.

The three-sided courtyard range has a modern louvred lantern on the ridge of its southeastern section, with hipped ends to the other two side ranges. The southeastern range presents a symmetrical facade to the courtyard, featuring two small openings on the left (one with a casement pair, the other blocked) and two larger casement pairs. These larger openings are situated above segmental arched former coach entries, one now glazed and the other infilled with a door for No. 8. A cambered-headed door-window-door arrangement is centrally located; the left door has been replaced with a long window, the centre with a short casement pair, and the right is a modern door leading to No. 7. The northeast and southwest ranges have flat-headed short casement-pair windows above doors and windows below, all with cambered heads. The northeast range has two brick ridge chimneys, first-floor casement pairs on each side, an eaves-breaking gabled window to the centre right, and a small casement pair to the centre left, positioned over a ground-floor window, door, window, and door (serving Nos. 4 and 5). A lower addition with a hipped roof has been added to the left end. The southwest range has three short casement pairs above four openings, alternately windows and doors (serving Nos. 9 and 10). A lean-to is present on the end wall, above a blank window.

On the exterior of the northeast wing are two low casement pairs to the upper floor, two large coach entries, two cambered-headed casement pairs, and a broad, flat-headed recess formerly containing double ledged doors (with L-shaped hinges and ventilator slats), now infilled with brick and a triple casement. The outer coach entry on the left has an inset triple casement and door, while the outer right entry is glazed. The addition on the right has two open bays, one a garage and the other partially infilled as a pedestrian thoroughfare. The southwest wing’s exterior is of Flemish bond brickwork, and features a decorative X-pattern ventilator of pierced brickwork above a ground-floor area with two large segmental arches containing modern glazing, flanked by three inserted casement pairs. The rear of the central southeastern range, also in Flemish bond, has five arched windows with modern glazing, some previously containing ventilator holes arranged in a pattern.

The interiors have not been inspected, and the buildings were altered during their conversion to residential use.
