Description
Lower Llwynburfach is a single-storey and attic building with mostly rubble walls and a steep corrugated iron roof, which was likely originally covered with stone tiles. The building has undergone 19th-century alterations, including a brick plinth on the left beneath weatherboarding, larger windows, and an altered doorway. There is a rubble chimney, which is partly fallen in, located opposite the entry. The structure features square panelled construction, with a gable-ended wing that steps up to the right. A rubble lateral chimney stack is positioned at the downhill end, with weatherboarding beyond where the plinth has fallen away. The black-and-white rear gable of the wing retains square-panelled infill. There is a lean-to at the rear opposite the chimney, and the rear wall is partly collapsed. A late 19th-century cowhouse extends beyond the main building, featuring alternate loft openings and doors at the front.
The earlier section of the building follows a lobby-entry plan and includes one smoke-blackened cruck couple beside the large stepped chimney, with the other cruck incorporated into the side wall of the cross wing. The original tie and collar beams have been removed. Inside, there is a large open fireplace with a brick-lined bread oven and a timber lintel with a step stop. The main beam is similarly chamfered and stopped, with exposed joists. There are partial remains of a diamond-mullion window frame in the rear stone wall. The cross wing features a step-stopped spine beam and scroll-stopped wall beams that support the ends of the joists. The interior includes a wattle and daub partition infill, a boarded door, and a winder stair. Evidence exists for two original mullion windows set within the framing of the east wall and south gable. As of 1992, the building is in poor structural condition.
