Description
The Pales, a Quaker Meeting House, is a single-storey building constructed of rubble stone with dressed quoins. It features a central enclosed porch topped with thatched roofs. The porch has a double boarded door set beneath a cambered arch, and there are four small-paned timber casements, with modern windows fitted in the original openings.
Inside the porch, there are two separate six-panel doors, one dated 1745 and the other 1825, which lead to the meeting room and the former schoolroom. The schoolroom was originally intended for women's business meetings. The partition wall between the two rooms includes three large openings, which are covered by boarded and battened shutters that are hinged at the top and bottom with strap hinges.
The meeting room features a modern boarded floor, a raised dais with benches for Elders and Overseers, including a front bench with a balustrated back and a rear bench against the east wall with a modern panelled back. The schoolroom has a floor that combines flagstone and tile, along with a 19th-century open fireplace that has a timber surround.
