Description

Lower Gwestydd Farmhouse is a one and a half storey building that features a box frame construction with square panels and plaster infill. The farmhouse includes a large gabled jettied dormer dating from 1684, which is adorned with cusped decorative framing. A jettied bressumer supported by scale brackets displays the inscription "OLORDMYGODINTHEEDOI": PUTMY: TRUST: SAVEME- FROMALLTHEMTHAT: PERSECUTEME: AND: DELIVERME". Below this, the beam is marked with "JOHN JONES ANN: DO: 1683".

The structure features a 17th century four light mullion and transom window with ovolo moulding and iron opening lights. The corner posts are embellished with scaled pendants and carved dragon's tongue motifs. On the ground floor, there is a modern four light window and a two light window to the extreme left. A modern gabled porch provides entry to the lobby, which is accessed through a 19th century panelled door. The steeply pitched slate roof is complemented by 19th century bargeboards and finials, while a central brick chimney stack from the 19th century has fillets and stock brick bands, with an earlier saw tooth base. The left end and rear elevations are constructed of 19th century brick with modern windows, and there is a 19th century outshot and lateral chimney.

The later cross range, possibly from 1684, is close studded with a mid-rail and corner braces. It has a jettied attic with cusped decorative framing and a modern window. The first floor features a 16 pane sash window, while the ground floor has a modern window. A cellar doorway is located to the right in a brick plinth. The left flank has a three light mullion and transom window with ovolo moulding. The right end wall has a three window elevation and a truncated stepped projecting brick stack to the left, with a similar stack of later date to the right. The rear is largely brick nogged with blocked 17th century windows, modern windows in the attic, and a 19th century stair window. There is also a later two storey bay, possibly from the 18th century, with light framing, square panels, and two light casements. The roofs are steeply pitched with red pantiles, deep verges, and exposed purlins.

Inside, the one and a half storey range retains the layout of a hall with a service room to the west end. The hall ceiling is framed in three ways with counterchanging joists and stop chamfers, featuring a plain mantel beam. The cross wing has a simpler stop chamfered beam. The front parlour includes an early 18th century chimney piece with roll moulding and a panelled overmantel with a cornice. The interior also has a dado rail, plastered beams, a contemporary fitted cupboard, and a double panelled doorway. A late 17th century dogleg stair with four flights features a newel pendant and an ornate doorhead leading to the first floor.
