Description
Llannerch-y-Cawr is a one-and-a-half-storey longhouse, built into a slope with the residential portion situated at the upper end. Constructed of limewashed rubble-stone walls with significant boulder footings, the house has a stone tile roof topped with a square stone ridge stack. The main doorway, located immediately to the right of the stack, features a replaced boarded door. To the left of the doorway is a large, renewed horned sash window illuminating the hall, and a smaller renewed sash at the end of the house, lighting the parlour. Gabled roof dormers, each containing a two-light casement window, are positioned above the doorway and to the left. To the right of the main doorway, the original cow house has a doorway with a renewed door – originally opening onto an outshut that has since been removed – and a small ventilation strip further to the right.
The left gable end, partially weatherboarded in the upper section, incorporates an added attic doorway. The rear elevation features a horned sash window to the right, illuminating the former dairy, and a small stair light aligned with the stack. To the left of this is a small two-light window illuminating the outer room. The cow house has a full-height opening with a replaced door, flanked by smaller openings. Above and to the right of the cow house doorway is a roof dormer with a two-light casement. A stable door, protected by a wooden lintel, is set back at the left end, with loft doors situated above it.
The main door opens into a small lobby with a cobbled floor. The hall on the left retains two pairs of cruck trusses, along with later cross beams with stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The fireplace has a timber lintel and an inserted late 19th-century range; to the left of the range is a stone winding stair. A simple, late 15th-century full-height post-and-panel screen, featuring doorways with segmental heads, separates the hall from the parlour and dairy, which are set at a higher level than the hall. The ground-floor rooms all have flagged floors. The stair provides access to the attic space above the house and to an additional room above the cow house. Above the main section of the house are two attic rooms separated by the original hall screen.
A timber-framed partition encloses a small outer room containing a fireplace backing onto the hall fireplace. This fireplace features a wooden lintel with a segmental head cut into it. The cow house retains an axially aligned cobbled floor. Added stairs lead into the loft.
