Description
Wern Bridge is a Grade II listed structure featuring stone coping and brick abutments with later blue engineering brick chamfered vertical corners. Iron strips have been applied to protect the corners on the towpath. The bridge is supported by five fish-bellied cast iron 'T'-joists, each with a bottom flange measuring 170mm by 40mm and a depth ranging from 210mm to 280mm. The outer joist is cast with pockets for a timber guard rail, all resting on stone padstones. The roadway is likely carried on original hardwood planks measuring 70mm by 305mm, spanning between the beams. There is no numbered identity plate present. The canal has been revetted with concrete.
The section of the canal between Red Bridge and Wern Bridge is elevated on a high embankment. The borrow pits along the canal were later used for growing osiers and as a source of puddling clay during the canal's construction. From 1824, these pits also served as a source for brick earth.
