Description
The former cooper's shop adjoining is a notable building with a history that suggests it was constructed as part of a single development. Nos 1-2 likely date from the late 16th or early 17th century, with the front of No 1 possibly dating to the late 18th century. The cooper's shop is probably from the early 19th century, while the workshops are from the late 19th century.
The exterior features painted brick and a slate roof with a single gable end stack and a rear wall stack. The buildings are two storeys tall. No 1 has a two-unit plan, with a centrally located doorway that consists of a six-panelled door with an overlight and a shallow canopy hood above the architrave. This is flanked by canted bay windows of late 19th-century style, featuring four-pane sash windows. There are small two-light casement windows just below the eaves. No 2 has a single unit plan, with its doorway to the right and a camber-headed window next to it, which has mullioned and transomed glazing. Below the eaves, there is a three-light casement window. The rear elevation of No 1 displays heavy square panelled box framing.
The former cooper's shop, which is at a lower level and adjoins No 1 on the right, is constructed of rough local rubble with brick dressings, all painted. It has a slate roof, a wide doorway to the left, and a three-light workshop window to the right, both featuring cambered heads. There are also two small-paned iron casement windows just below the eaves. The cooper's workshops extend from a wing at the rear of the shop and consist of single-storey sheds made of light timber framing with plank cladding.
These buildings form a group of special interest due to their vernacular character and early origins, as well as the remarkable survival of the cooper's shop and associated workshops, which together represent a historically significant and complete group.
