Description

The Traveller's Rest is likely of 18th-century origin, sharing architectural characteristics with the adjacent Red Lion Hotel, although it underwent significant alterations in the 19th century. These later changes include the addition of vermiculated quoins, rusticated detailing to the ground floor with a plinth, and new windows. The building is three storeys high and has a two-window facade rendered in a scribed texture. It has a slate roof with bracket eaves that are continuous with the Red Lion Hotel, a brick stack on the left side, and a cement-rendered stack on the right. The windows are recessed sash windows with margins and cills; those on the second floor have shallower upper sashes, with four panes to the left and a tripartite window to the right. A shop front occupies the ground floor to the right, featuring a cornice and end brackets. It has two windows flanking a centrally placed, splayed entrance with a half-glazed door. The fascia and cornice are extended to the left, covering a similar door leading to the adjoining house, which has panelled reveals. The quoins and rusticated detailing extend around the corner. The gable end facing Church Lane is clad in slate from midway up the ground floor, as is a further two-window cross range attached to it. The windows in this section are mostly sash windows, and there's a boarded loft door with a raised gabled winch cover. The extreme right end has a small-paned metal frame window, painted over, next to a window in what was formerly a door opening. A splayed corner leads to a twin-gabled rear section, which is also slate clad, and includes a variety of sash windows and one casement. A modern kitchen door and window are also present there. The building is included on the list for its group value, contributing to the character of the surrounding area.
