Description
The Parish War Memorial at St Dogfan's Church is a Grade II listed structure featuring a Celtic cross design. It is composed of two stones, standing on a plinth and two low steps, and is situated within a paved enclosure taken from the churchyard. This enclosure is surrounded by black-painted iron railings with silver tips, set on a low wall, and includes a gate leading to the street.
The upper stone of the memorial showcases a carved wheel-head with a central block and four surrounding blocks, all adorned with interlace patterns on both faces, although there is slight damage at the top. The shaft exhibits pronounced entasis and features interlace patterning that separates three inscribed bands, with one side in English and the other in Welsh. The lower stone, which also has pronounced entasis, lists the names of 50 fallen soldiers and is decorated in relief at its base. The plinth is designed as a truncated pyramid, intricately carved with a repeating pattern on all sides, including carved fishes at the foot and a carved harp at the rear.
Additionally, a slate affixed to the plinth commemorates four more names from the Second World War.
