Description

Old Castle Farmhouse is a farmhouse built of red brick in Flemish bond, standing on a stone base. It has one storey, a cellar, and an attic. The building features distinctive shaped brick Dutch gables with brick copings. The northern gable has concave ramped sides and a segmental curved top, while the southern gable also has concave ramped sides but a flat top with a square brick chimney. The southern gable end is windowless and includes an added lean-to brick porch with a central doorway and a timber fixed two-light window to the left, featuring pointed heads on the lights. Inside the porch is a 19th-century ledged door with a four-pane overlight in a pegged frame.

On the western side, there is an eaves dormer with a catslide roof and a pair of small-paned iron casements. The ground floor has cambered-headed windows to the left and centre, with a casement pair to the left and a triple casement in the centre, all featuring iron opening lights. There is a flight of steps leading to the centre ledged cellar door, which has a two-pane overlight and a ventilator. The northern end gable has a cambered-headed casement pair.

The eastern front is particularly notable, featuring a large half-round bowed projection topped with a conical slate roof. There is a 19th-century gabled dormer that breaks the eaves, containing a small-paned iron casement pair. The ground floor has a cambered-headed opening above a small-paned triple casement with top lights and iron opening lights, and a blue brick later sill. The rubble basement has a segmental pointed opening with chamfered red sandstone voussoirs, which may date to the 17th century or earlier, divided by a brick pier with two single-pane casements. To the left, there is a small square window and a door at the far left. The wall to the left of the bow has a massive oak lintel over a tall recess backed by rough brickwork, the purpose of which is unknown.

The interior has not been inspected.
