Description

Capel Peniel is a chapel with a rear vestry/schoolroom, built in 1903 and likely replacing an earlier building from 1811. The chapel is constructed of rock-faced stone with yellow ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The front has a pediment with ball finials at the angles. A round arch defines the recessed central bay, which contains a tympanum inscribed "PENIEL MC" with the rebuilding date (1903) around its circumference; it is framed by a keyed segmental arch on brackets and rusticated pilasters define the angles and the recessed bay. The upper level features keyed oculi with stained glass in the outer bays and a triple round-headed window with small panes and margin glazing in the centre, all supported by a continuous sill band. Below are double round-headed windows in the outer bays, also with sill bands, and commemorative tablets. The central bay has a 6-panel door with a stained glass overlight beneath a keyed round arch. The side walls each have four tall windows under round arches with ashlar surrounds and a sill band. Sash windows with margin glazing and fanlights are present throughout. An easterly slate tablet records the original building of 1811. The rear wall is slate hung with a single round-headed window and ashlar quoins with chamfered joints. The vestry/schoolroom behind is brick, with a hipped slate roof and brick projections under hipped roofs on its lateral walls. An end stack rises above a gablet, and the lateral walls have two windows with stone lintels and sills, their sash windows matching those of the chapel in their margin glazing.

The entrance vestibule features a floor of decorative tiles and a window with margin glazing opposite the main door. Pine 3-panel doors lead to the chapel on either side. The interior has no gallery, though the proportions suggest it was designed to accommodate one. The walls are faced with white concrete blocks in dark grey mortar to resemble ashlar, with planked wainscot. The windows have moulded rere arches with foliage capitals. Above a moulded cornice is a boarded and ribbed ceiling with two small roundels pierced with a four-leaf pattern. There are pine set fawr and pews. The pulpit has a panelled front and steps with turned balusters on either side. A plaster reredos behind the pulpit has fluted columns framing four blank arches, a foliated impost band, and a moulded round arch with a prominent keystone and a tympanum of foliage. Doors to either side of the set fawr lead to the undivided vestry/schoolroom.
