Description

The Institute is a two-storey building constructed with painted roughcast on a dark brick plinth. It features a slate eaves roof adorned with yellow terracotta half-round ridge tiles and oak bargeboards. The right side has a wide projecting gable, which includes a roundel plaque with crossed keys on a shield above a first-floor oak 6-light leaded window with a central transom. The left return of the gable has a door leading onto the flat roof of a ground floor projection, which was originally fitted with a timber balcony.

The ground floor of the gabled bay is timbered and has a moulded cornice and entablature above three cambered-headed openings. The middle opening is broad and contains a large 35-pane fixed window, flanked by Tudor-arched entries leading to deeply recessed Tudor-headed doors. The left projection, positioned in front of the main range, is stepped, aligning with the ground floor right. The entablature continues over a roughcast short wall featuring two leaded windows and a brick plinth.

There is a windowless return, followed by an oak-mullioned corner window on a higher brick base, which has four lights facing the front and one light on the north return. The timber entablature and cornice extend over a 6-light oak mullioned and transomed window on the first floor.

The left gable end showcases mock jettying, with the entablature wrapping around on moulded brackets. It also has two three-light mullion windows on the left. To the left of the main range is a rear wing with two bays and lower eaves, featuring a three-light casement window on the right and a two-light window to the left above a Tudor-headed door set in a timber doorcase with fluted pilasters, entablature, and cornice. This door is a six-panel design.

The rear of the wing includes a ground floor lean-to, while the rear of the main range features a large mullion-and-transom oak window on the first floor to the left and a long stair light in the angle to the right. The area in front of the building is paved with stone setts. The main front room serves as a library.
