Description
Snead Farmhouse is a double depth, gable-fronted house built in the 18th century, featuring a lobby entry plan with two full storeys and a cellar. The farmhouse has slate roofs, a low plinth, and square-panelled box framing, although some lower areas have been rebuilt in masonry, with plaster and brick panel infill. It has three chimney stacks: two masonry lateral stacks and one brick ridge stack on the west range. There is a masonry lean-to on the west side with an asbestos-covered roof.
The house consists of two parallel ranges. On the north elevation, the wider east gabled range is slightly advanced, with a blocked doorway in the west gable opposite the chimney. The first floor features cast-iron small-paned casement windows with quadrant stays in each gable, while the lower windows have been renewed in earlier openings. The east elevation displays four rows of panels with brick nogging and a substantial mid rail, leading to a significant masonry section and a lateral stack towards the rear. There is one cast-iron casement window that extends to the eaves, with a planked door below.
The rear (south) side is masonry in the lower half and rendered above. It includes a rear door located inside a modern porch, opposite the blocked front door. The upper storey has iron casement windows similar to those on the front, along with a modern casement window and a cellar hatch on the ground floor of the east gable. Access to the interior was not available at the time of inspection in February 1996.
