Description
The stables at Cedar House, built in the mid-19th century, feature Tudor Gothic design elements and are related stylistically to the Old Vicarage, though in a simpler form. Constructed of brick with a slate roof and a brick chimney, the building has two storeys. The front elevation is symmetrical, with a central bay that includes a Tudor arched carriage opening fitted with wooden doors. There are small windows on either side at ground floor level. Above the entrance arch, a gablet with kneelers is present, and a chimney rises immediately behind it.
On each side of the central bay, the building has angled ranges; the left side is for carriages, while the right side is designated for stabling. Inside the entrance arch, doors lead to the ostler's accommodation on one side and a single stable on the other. The ostler's room is equipped with a small fireplace for heating. The carriage accommodation has undergone alterations, while the stables contain four wooden stalls and cast-iron hay baskets. The floors have been repaired, and the lofts feature simple kingpost roofs with some reused timbers from the 17th and 18th centuries.
This building is included for its group value with Cedar House and serves as a good example of a mid-19th century stable block that retains several original features.
