Description
The Vertical Winding Engine House at the former Wynnstay Colliery is a Grade II* listed building made of sandstone ashlar with cast-iron fixings. The southeast elevation features a tall arched opening with a stone architrave and keystone that nearly reaches the eaves level, flanked by two similar, lower arched openings. The right-hand return has a gabled roof with shaped kneelers and includes two tall arched openings, each with stone architraves and keystones, beneath which are low masonry arches. The left-hand return mirrors the right but lacks the low masonry arches. The rear of the building has one tall arched opening that is flush with a projecting keystone.
Inside, the structure is divided into three chambers by two massive masonry walls, each wall featuring three arched openings with cast-iron boxes set into the wall above each arch. The side chambers contain massive stone engine beds.
