Description
Pen y Bryn is a long, two-storey building with a four-window facade, constructed of whitewashed random stone and topped with a slate roof. The building features stone stacks to the left of the center and at the right end. The original part of the dwelling consists of a two-window range at the center, with the front entrance located to the left of center beneath a stack. The entrance has a 20th-century part-lit boarded door with a concrete lintel, sheltered by a gabled porch canopy supported on brackets. Flanking the doorway are renewed two-light wooden casements, likely in their original openings, with concrete lintels above the lower storey and under the eaves. To the immediate right of the entrance is a polished granite tablet commemorating John "Ceiriog" Hughes, which was a gift from Phyllis Clare Storey of Plas Nantyr in 1932.
To the right of the original dwelling is an added section, likely a secondary dwelling, which is slightly set back but shares the same roof. This section has a boarded door to the left and a casement window on each storey to the right, consistent with the rest of the building. There is a lean-to structure against the east gable end, featuring two casements at the front, one of which has replaced a doorway. The far left end of the house, believed to have been a stable, includes a small window on the upper storey. A glazed 20th-century linking range connects at right angles to a converted farm building.
The rear of the building is not whitewashed and has wooden windows that were renewed in the 20th century. There is a two-storey rear wing behind the ridge stack, which has small four-pane windows on the gable end. To the left of the wing is a two-light casement on each storey. Further left, an added range features a gabled dormer with a casement and a four-pane window below. To the right of the wing is a small outshut with a roof that includes skylights. The west gable end has a 12-pane horned sash window.
Access to the interior was not available at the time of inspection.
