Description

The lime kilns at Bryn Mawr, located at Aberdo Quarry, are a full-height structure facing west, built from large blocks of grey stone. The second kiln from the left appears to be the oldest; it is set back slightly and is partially ruined, with missing voussoirs but the stone soffit of the draw-hole tunnel visible behind a pile of spoil. The shaft of this kiln is partly exposed and features a fire-brick lining. The two kilns on either side belong to a later phase, with the left kiln built at a slight angle to the others. Both draw-hole tunnels have round-arched heads made of stone voussoirs and stone soffits, with small flues at the back that retain ironwork and have partially missing brick arched heads. The right kiln has domed brickwork above its flue.

To the right of these kilns is a butt joint followed by another pair of kilns that feature wide brick arched heads at their draw-hole tunnels. The soffits of these tunnels are made of brick and are supported by stone side walls. Each tunnel has a stone rear wall that contains a flue with a cast iron lintel and a pair of cast iron damper doors above.

The high tapering southern end wall of the kilns has two cast iron tie plates, while the northern end wall is stepped and partly eroded. Fragments of a low rear wall can be seen at the upper level, and the tops of three shafts, all lined with brick, are visible.
