Adjoining Kitchen Garden Wall at Nerquis Hall

The adjoining kitchen garden wall at Nerquis Hall is a semi-octagonal Gothic orangery designed by architect Benjamin Gummow from Ruabon, built in 1813. The structure is made of brick with rendered sides and features ashlar facing on the three main walls. It has a castellated parapet with a moulded string-course beneath crocketted and gabled finials, most of which have been reduced. These finials are located at the corners and sit atop narrow stepped and gabled buttresses with moulded bases. The orangery has large pointed-arched openings on its five faces, with the side openings and the central one featuring moulded labels. The three main faces display complex wrought-iron tracery in the Decorated style, although the central face is missing its lower section.

To the right of the orangery, there is a roughly 14-foot high brick wall with stone capping, which is essentially from the late 18th century. A modern gated entrance is located immediately to the right of the orangery. The wall extends about 100 feet along the west-east section, with the flanking walls of a former greenhouse projecting to the north. These walls are stone-coped and have ashlar faces to the north with returned quoins. The wall continues eastward at the same height until it ends in a slope. In the center of this final stretch, there is a large inserted entrance featuring a heavily-moulded oak doorcase with ovolo mouldings and an outer chevron pattern. The three sections of the doorcase, including the lintel and reveals, are clearly made from re-used 17th-century material, likely sourced from the top of a screen, and it has a plain boarded door.
