Description
The War Memorial is constructed of reinforced concrete and features a slightly tapering square-section pier that stands on a square base, which rests on a three-tier plinth. The pier is topped with a heavily moulded capstone, which supports a cross made from the same material. The cross has an octagonal shape and a bulbous base on a small irregular three-tier plinth, with the central tier adorned with a wreath.
The main pier has raised panels that hold bronze plaques. The plaques on the east and west sides list the names of those who died, while the south plaque reads, "1914-18, for God, for King, for Country …Their graves are far and wide, but their memory abides in our hearts." The north plaque lists those who died in various locations, including Flanders, Macedonia, Gallipoli, Palestine, Mesopotamia, and the High Seas, and notes that the memorial was erected by the people of Connah's Quay and Shotton. The base on the north side features a wreath flanked by the years 1914 and 1918.
An inscription on the east and west sides, taken from a poem by Rudyard Kipling, states, "What stands if freedom fall? Who dies if England live?" The south side of the base includes a bronze plaque listing those who have died in action since 1945. Low iron railings with circle decorations are attached to the lower two tiers of the plinth, except on the north front, where an angled block commemorates those who died in World War II (1939-45). Above this, the plinth bears the inscription, "Is it nothing to you all, ye that pass by."
