Description
The former police station, built in 1901, features a symmetrical design resembling a pair of two-storey houses with two windows each. It is constructed from red brick and topped with a slate roof that has overhanging eaves and tile cresting. The building includes central brick lateral stacks on both the front and rear roof pitches, along with brick and sandstone detailing.
Each outer side has a doorway with a boarded door and a plain overlight, both sheltered by a flat moulded stone canopy supported by decorative brackets. The inner sides are adorned with pairs of tall 18-pane horned sash windows that have flat arched heads made of gauged brickwork and stone sills. The same style of windows is aligned on the first floor beneath a pair of hipped half-dormers with finials, which flank the central lateral stack. A sandstone sill band runs above a dentilled brick course. Between the pairs of upper storey windows is a large sandstone tablet featuring a decorated shield in relief, inscribed with 'AD 1901'. Below the sill band on the ground floor is a wide rectangular panel with an eared sandstone surround, which is rendered inside and may have originally referred to the police station.
The east and west gable ends are adjacent to semi-detached houses of similar age. The rear, which is partly visible, has two four-pane sashes under segmental brick heads on the upper storey, flanking the lateral stack, and some brick lean-tos on the lower storey.
In front of the building is a paved area enclosed by a forecourt wall and railings. The low red brick wall features sandstone saddleback coping and is topped with plain iron railings. Each end has a gateway marked by square-section stone piers with carved tops, and plain iron gates with decorative scrolled tops on the outer posts. The main entrance is located at the left door, while the interior has been modernised and converted into offices.
