Description

The Lloyd Monument, situated within the Church of St Peter, is an Early English-style tower built to a height of approximately 5 metres. Constructed primarily of buff sandstone on a limestone ashlar plinth, it incorporates pink/white figured marble, red and white sandstone dressings, and a red brick core. The plinth is stepped, rising to the main tower which has a square section and a twice-chamfered plinth. Pointed-arched niches are present on each face above the plinth level, each containing an inscription tablet, with further inscriptions on the plinth base itself. The niches are constructed with red and white sandstone voussoirs, supported by engaged marble columns with moulded bases and waterleaf capitals, and feature moulded labels with foliated stops. At each corner, a shaft and capital – consistent with those in the niches – are accompanied by a central square pier, creating a cluster of three columns on each side. Above each niche, set to the left and right, are inset marble spheres. A stiff-leafed frieze runs along the top, below crocketed and foliated gables, with additional crocketed finials at the corners. The gables each have a blind quatrefoil oculus in their centre, though the finials were found to be damaged or reduced at the time of inspection. The octagonal spire is topped with a crocketed section and carved fictive tiles, including lucarnes. A roundel on the main western face of the lower tower section contains a small limestone bust commemorating John Lloyd of the Middle Temple, KC, who died in 1806.
