Description
The gazebo at the Old Rectory is a small, square structure built from locally-burned red brick, featuring a pitched slate roof and contemporary brick gable parapets. The entrance is located on the northeast gable and originally had a segmentally-arched vent above, but this has been altered to an irregularly-enlarged opening. There is a blocked vertical light on the northwest side and an original square window on the southeast side, which has chamfered oak reveals and sill, with a later 19th-century frame added onto it.
Attached to the southeast and flush with the southwest gable is a short section of brick wall, approximately 2 meters long and 2 meters high, made from contemporary or near-contemporary brick. This wall features raking brick copings and ends neatly, indicating that there may have been an opening there originally.
Inside, the gazebo has an earthen floor and retains much of its original roof structure, with the exception of five rafters that were replaced around 1900. The walls are finished with original lime plaster, which has layers of limewash, the earliest of which is a yellow ochre wash. This finish extends onto the roof timbers and the oak window reveals, and is complemented by a clearly defined low painted dado in carbon black.
