Description
Jesus Chapel is a small L-shaped chapel built in rubble masonry with axe-dressed quoins. There are traces of ochre-coloured pigment on the exterior. The roof features a tile ridge and hip, along with a single bellcote over the west gable, topped by a small ball-finial.
The chapel has stone mullion and transom windows, with two on the south side, one on the east, one on the north of the nave, and one on the north gable of the later wing. The entrance boasts a fine door casing with Tuscan pilasters on moulded bases and plinths, supporting simple caps and an inscribed lintel with moulded edges. The inscription notes that the Jesus Chapel was founded and endowed by Rice Williams of Eyarth Uchaf, gentleman, in 1619, consecrated in 1723, and rebuilt in 1787.
Access to the chapel is from the north side. Inside, there is a simple nave divided into three bays with V-braced trusses and two purlins on each side. The east truss now rests on a cantilever of the wallplate. The north wing has a similar construction but is in two bays. The flooring consists of 19th-century red quarry tiles, with a slight step at the entrance and at the altar.
The altar table is designed in the Jacobean style, featuring a central IHS and decorative vines and fish. The pulpit is also Jacobean, with arch-headed panels and a moulded frieze. There is a bench at the west, while all other seating is loose. An octagonal font dated 1663 has been brought here from the parish church.
