Description
18, The Village is one of two unequal terraces of cottages built around 1857 during the time of Hugh Williams, who later became the 3rd baronet Bodelwyddan. These cottages were constructed to accompany the church, parsonage, and schools that were established on the instructions of his sister, Lady Margaret Willoughby de Broke. The developments were planned together as the west side of a street that runs at right angles to the St Asaph Road, opposite the vicarage.
The south terrace consists of 11 cottages designed in a picturesque articulated style, which is related to the northern terrace but features even more restrained Gothic elements. In the elevation, three cottages (numbers 8, 13, and 18) are set slightly forward and have gabled fronts, while the other cottages have eaves at the front with dormers. The cottages are constructed from axe-dressed local limestone that is informally coursed, with ashlar window surrounds. They have slate roofs laid in regular courses with tile ridges, and ridge chimneys that have an offset just above ridge level and enlarged cornices. Unlike the northern terrace, the chimneys in this terrace have ribs on the broad faces, similar to those found on the service yard buildings at Bodelwyddan Castle. The upper windows, both in the gables and dormers, are 6-pane 2-light casement windows, while the lower windows are 9-pane 3-light casement windows.
Some of the cottages have been modified over time. Changes in masonry are evident in numbers 9 and 10, which have slightly affected the symmetry of the terrace. At the southern end, number 18 has been enlarged at the rear and may have been occupied at one time as two separate cottages.
