Description

14, The Village is one of two unequal terraces of cottages built around 1857 during the time of Hugh Williams, who later became the 3rd baronet of Bodelwyddan. These cottages were constructed to accompany the church, parsonage, and schools established under the direction of his sister, Lady Margaret Willoughby de Broke. The development was planned as part of the western side of a street that runs at right angles to St Asaph Road, directly across from the vicarage.

The south terrace consists of 11 cottages designed in a picturesque style that relates to the northern terrace, though with even more restrained Gothic elements. In the arrangement of the elevation, three cottages (numbers 8, 13, and 18) project slightly forward and feature gabled fronts, while the remaining cottages have eaves at the front with dormers. They are constructed from axe-dressed local limestone that is informally coursed, with ashlar window surrounds. The roofs are covered with slate laid in regular courses and topped with tile ridges. The ridge chimneys are set with an offset just above the ridge level and have enlarged cornices. Unlike the northern terrace, the chimneys on this terrace feature ribs on their broad faces, similar to the chimneys found on the service yard buildings at Bodelwyddan Castle. The upper windows, both in the gables and dormers, are 6-pane 2-light casement windows, while the lower windows are 9-pane 3-light casement windows.

Some modifications have been made to the cottages. Notable masonry changes can be seen in numbers 9 and 10, which have slightly disrupted the symmetry of the terrace. At the southern end, number 18 has been enlarged at the rear and may have been used as two cottages at some point. Additionally, some cottages have been fitted with UPVC windows.
