Description

11 The Village is one of two unequal terraces of cottages built around 1857 during the time of Hugh Williams, who later became the 3rd baronet of Bodelwyddan. These cottages were constructed to accompany the nearby church, parsonage, and schools, which were established under the guidance of his sister, Lady Margaret Willoughby de Broke. The development was designed to form the western side of a street that runs at right angles to St Asaph Road, directly opposite the vicarage.

The south terrace consists of 11 cottages, designed in a picturesque articulated style that relates to the northern terrace but features even more restrained Gothic elements. In the elevation, three cottages (numbers 8, 13, and 18) project slightly forward and have gabled fronts, while the remaining cottages feature eaves at the front with dormers. The cottages are constructed from axe-dressed local limestone that is informally coursed, with ashlar window surrounds. They have slate roofs laid in regular courses with tile ridges, and ridge chimneys that have an offset just above the ridge level and enlarged cornices. Unlike the northern terrace, the chimneys on this terrace have ribs on the broad faces, similar to the chimneys found on service yard buildings at Bodelwyddan Castle. The upper windows, both in the gables and dormers, are 6-pane 2-light casement windows, while the lower windows are 9-pane 3-light casement windows.

Some modifications have been made to the cottages. Notably, masonry changes are visible in numbers 9 and 10, which have slightly impacted the symmetry of the terrace. At the southern end, number 18 has been enlarged at the rear and may have been used as two cottages at some point. Additionally, a door has been replaced.
