Description

74 West Parade is a three-storey terrace of five double-fronted villas built in yellow brick with red brick and stone dressings, topped with Welsh slate roofs, although No 75 has been replaced with concrete tiles. The end wall stacks feature red brick bands, which have been lost or reduced in height in Nos 71 and 75. Each villa has a central entrance flanked by steep gables, with ornate timber gabled porches. Some original doors remain, including a four-panelled door with shouldered glazed upper panels in No 73, and an eight-panel door with deep moulding and glazed upper panels in No 74.

On either side of the entrances are three-storeyed canted bay windows that extend down to the basement, adorned with raised terracotta panels. These bay windows are typical of seaside boarding houses and were designed to provide views of the sea from the principal drawing rooms located at the front of the houses. The attic storey features paired windows beneath the gables, and the entire terrace is fitted with two-pane sash windows, linked by continuous sill bands and stone cornice bands. The paired gables have pronounced bargeboards, originally supported by free-standing collar and king-post trusses, though only No 74 retains these trusses. The finials on the gables mostly survive, while deep terracotta, tile, and brick eaves bands add to the architectural detail.

The basement areas originally featured decorative cast-iron railings between squat chamfered stone gate posts, with the railings still present at No 74. This terrace is of exceptional interest as a purpose-built boarding house development that retains nearly all of its original details. It is the best example of its type in Rhyl, showcasing the characteristic multi-storeyed form with prominent bay windows that influenced seaside boarding house design in the later 19th century.
