Description
The Crescent Public House is a three-storey building dating from around 1860 to 1870, located at the corner of Edward Henry Street and Crescent Road in Rhyl. It features roughcast render with smooth-rendered dressings, including quoins and decorative panelling on the bay windows. The slate roof covers a five-window range on Edward Henry Street and a three-window range on Crescent Road.
The main public house frontage has a corner doorway flanked by square windows on the return elevations, all connected by a fascia supported by heavy console brackets. The doorcase is inset with fluted columns leading to an architrave, and there is a blind round-arched window above the doorway, which is part of a two-storey section with a reeded head. The Edward Henry Street elevation includes two two-storey canted bay windows, flanking what were likely originally two doorways when the building was divided into separate properties. The left-hand opening has been converted to a window, with similar windows placed between and above the bays on the upper floors. The surviving doorway features an entablature supported by ornate console brackets.
On either side of the angled entrance, there are oriel bay windows, and two additional two-storey canted bay windows are present on the Crescent Road elevation. All windows are two-pane sashes with margin lights, rendered architraves, and continuous hood moulds. The building is adorned with a modillion eaves band.
This public house is a typical example of a later 19th-century neighbourhood establishment, showcasing distinctive details that highlight its commercial purpose while maintaining an ordinary house plan.
