Description
Graig Uchaf Cruck Cottage and Barn are single-storey buildings consisting of a total of five bays, situated on slightly rising land. The overall dimensions are approximately 5 meters wide and 25 meters long. The barn is located to the west of the cottage and shares the same height and width.
The cottage features two bays made of brickwork that correspond to its original extent, along with an additional stone-built bay on the east side. There are two small windows on the south side and four on the north side, most of which are boarded up. The roof is covered with slate and has a tile ridge.
The barn is constructed from local stone rubble and includes a slit ventilator and an altered doorway on the south wall. There is also an altered opening on the north wall and a large opening that spans the full width of the bay closest to the cottage. The barn has a roof made of corrugated sheeting.
Access to the cottage is through a small porch on the north side, which is in a ruinous state and has been reduced in size. Two pairs of crucks from the original cottage remain. The west room, as currently partitioned, contains a small 19th-century kitchen range. The mid cross-wall has been rebuilt and features 19th-century principal rafters. The cruck frame of the original east wall is fully exposed, and the additional bay on the east side includes an end fireplace.
Inside the barn, there is a central cruck pair with nearly complete full-size blades, a sill that is slightly fire-damaged, a tie beam, rafters, a collar beam, and a central post above and below the tie. The cruck frame of the wall shared by the barn and cottage is similar but has been modified up to tie beam level to accommodate the brickwork of the barn wall. A third surviving cruck frame also has nearly complete full-size cruck blades, a tie beam, rafters, and a collar beam.
