Description
The Cruck Barn at Ty-coch is a 5-bay threshing barn featuring cruck construction, dating from the 18th century. It has stone gable ends that extend about 2 meters at the sides. The side walls are made of timber framing, consisting of three panels in height, built with light scantling timber on a plinth of rubble stonework. The timber framing on the north side is largely intact, while much of the south side has been replaced with brickwork. There is a large door that remains on the north side, located in the second bay from the east, and evidence of a similar door on the south side.
Inside, four cruck trusses are still present. The upper cruck (truss 1) was replaced with stonework around 1850. Truss 2 is the dais-end truss, which shows signs of a former door in the right cruck blade. Truss 3 serves as the central hall truss and features a cranked notch-lapped lower collar. Truss 4 includes a tall king-post that supports the ridge, with mortices for a loft doorway positioned beneath the collar and a rebate for a doorway on the southeast side. Truss 5 has a later collar and king-post, while truss 6 appears to partially survive within the stonework of the lower end gable.
