Description

Celynog is a two-storey house built from well-coursed and roughly squared local shale, featuring tooled limestone dressings such as flat-arched window heads, and slate roofs with end wall stacks. The layout includes an entrance and stair hall located in a rear wing, which is positioned between the main range to the east that contains the principal rooms, and a parallel rear range that houses a study and kitchen. Additional service accommodation is found in a lean-to wing to the south, which includes a stable, coach house, and cow house beyond.

The entrance is located beneath a lean-to verandah roof on the north side, with a chamfered stone architrave, and there is a 12-pane sash window above. The main front faces east and consists of a two-window range with tripartite sash windows on the ground floor and 12-pane sashes above.

Inside, the wide entrance and stair hall separates the principal living rooms to the east from the study and service areas to the west. Most of the original joinery remains intact, including a fine plain spindle staircase, panelled doors and rebates, as well as panelled window shutters and aprons. The original fire-surrounds are preserved in most rooms, made of stone with stylised swags in high relief, and several retain the original enriched cast iron rectangular hob grates.
