Description
Old House, located to the south of Egryn Abbey, is a building constructed from boulder stone with a stone wall-plate and a tin sheet roof. It features a coped gable on the west side and has stacks on each gable end, with the one on the west projecting and the one on the east truncated. There is also a central stack that likely indicates the original subdivision of the building. The quality of the details suggests that the main entrance faced north towards the main house. This entrance has dressed quoins and a segmental arched head, with a window to the right that has a stone lintel and is revealed internally to be ovolo moulded with mullions and a transom. To the left of the entrance is another window, which has small panes and may have been inserted into an earlier opening that retains a rough lintel.
The original arrangement of the western section is less clear; there may be an inserted left-hand opening, while two blocked or partially blocked openings beyond it, with the left one appearing to be a doorway, may be original as they have heavy stone lintels. The details on the south elevation suggest a change of use to farm buildings, with a doorway offset to the right of center in the eastern range, aligned with the main doorway to the north. There are three long, low windows irregularly spaced beneath the eaves. The west section has steps leading up to a doorway and an enlarged opening at the first floor.
Although not fully inspected, the eastern section is designed as a large single room with a smaller chamber on one side, a layout that is repeated on both floors. There are two stop-chamfered beams flanking the aligned doorways and chamfered joists. A large fireplace is located on the east gable wall, which includes bellows that relate to its later use as a smithy. A later lath and plaster partition separates a small secondary room at the lower end, while a later staircase is positioned against the front wall. The first floor is open to the roof, with one bay originally partitioned off and featuring a small fireplace with a flat stone lintel. The roof consists of four bays supported by three massive collar trusses, with projecting pegs at the collar and apex joints.
