Description

This terrace of five buildings, Pensarn, Glan-Awen, Three Rivers, Clydfan, and Tegfan, are located on Smith Street. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble with a shared slate roof, and are distinguished by five plain end and central chimneys. Clydfan and Tegfan form a pair of one-window units on the right-hand side of the terrace, finished with a stucco render. These units feature paired entrances in the centre, a blind window above, modern boarded doors, and later 19th-century sash windows on both floors; the first-floor windows are placed under the eaves, and retain their character well. Three Rivers, originally two dwellings, now has a modern central entrance flanked by enlarged modern windows with intersecting wooden tracery at the top of the uppermost section. The first floor has four modern windows set within a rendered facade, and a large modern extension is located at the rear. A distinctive break in the masonry is visible between the rear extension and Glan-Awen. Glan-Awen features a central entrance with a modern door, flanked by modern windows on both floors set within original openings. Original slate lintels, with returned slate labels, are present above the ground-floor windows. Pensarn, on the left-hand side of the group, is roughcast and includes a large recessed area on the ground floor that indicates a former shopfront. A modern glazed door and an adjacent window are now within this recess, while the first floor retains an original 16-pane recessed 19th-century sash window. A slightly set-back lean-to addition adjoins to the left.
