Description

This is a group of five buildings – Pensarn, Glan-Awen, Three Rivers, Clydfan, and Tegfan – forming a terrace on Smith Street. They are constructed of coursed rubble under a shared slate roof, with five plain end and central chimneys defining the individual units.

Clydfan and Tegfan, located at the right-hand side of the terrace, are stuccoed and present as a reflected pair of one-window units. They feature paired entrances in the centre and a blind window above. Modern boarded doors and later 19th-century sash windows are on both floors, with those to the first floor positioned under the eaves. These buildings retain their original character well.

Three Rivers, originally two dwellings, now has a modern central entrance flanked by enlarged modern windows with intersecting wooden tracery at the top. The rendered first floor has four modern windows, and a large modern extension is present at the rear. A distinctive break in the masonry is visible between this extension and Glan-Awen.

Glan-Awen has a central entrance with a modern door and flanking modern windows on both floors, set within original openings. The ground floor windows have slate lintels with returned slate labels. Pensarn, on the left of the group, is roughcast and has a large recess on the ground floor, indicating a former shopfront. This recess contains a modern glazed door and a window. The first floor retains an original recessed 16-pane sash window from the 19th century, and a slightly set-back lean-to addition adjoins the building on the left.
