Description
The Field Cowhouse at Tan-y-Rhiw-Newydd is a vernacular structure dating from the 18th century, positioned with its gable facing a gentle hill-slope, which is a common practice. It is built from boulder rubble on prominent boulder foundations and features a slate roof with a crudely-kneelered, uncoped rubble gable parapet at the rear. The entrance is located at the lower gable and includes a large stone lintel, with a deeply-recessed part-boarded door, the upper part of which is open. There is also a former loading doorway at the rear gable, which is now partly boarded.
Inside, the cowhouse has a two-bay layout, showcasing original pegged oak tie-beam and collar trusses.
