Description

Hendre is a Georgian house, originally dating back to the 18th century, and extended in the 19th. The main part of the house is built of rubble stone on large boulder footings, with a steep slate roof, a coped gable on the right, and three roughcast stacks, the central and left-hand stacks having shaped tops. The front has five bays arranged in a three-bay block and a two-bay block, separated by a vertical joint, the left-hand block being the original part of the house. The central entrance has a replacement door set within a gabled porch supported by round rubble piers. To the left of the entrance is a 12-pane hornless sash window under a flat arch with voussoirs, which may have been the original entrance. Next to this is a 16-pane hornless sash window. To the right are a hornless and a horned 12-pane sash window. The upper-floor windows are narrower 12-pane horned sashes, appearing to be in slightly wider original openings in the three left-hand bays. Five gabled dormers have 12-pane horned sash windows.

The left-hand gable end is roughcast and contains two superimposed stair windows to the left of centre, under simple drip moulds. The right-hand gable end has a window inserted into an earlier doorway, and two small replacement upper-floor windows. A single-storey gabled projection has been added to the right side. At the rear, a secondary two-storey dwelling has been added in the 19th century, built of rubble stone with a slate roof and a roughcast stack. It has a three-window front with 4-pane horned sash windows in the upper storey, replacement lower storey windows, and a replacement door on the right. Inserted windows are present in its gable end and rear.

The rear of the main house has an original rear wing with an asymmetrical gable and a tall roughcast stack with a shaped top. A raised band is visible at eaves level. It contains a window in the gable end where a doorway formerly stood, and a replacement attic window. To the left of this wing is a window (formerly a doorway) below a 16-pane sash window; a lean-to partly obscures a full-height vertical joint marking the two main phases of the house’s construction. Further to the left are two replacement lower-storey windows, and in the upper storey, a narrow replacement window and a 16-pane sash window.
