Description
This is a university building constructed in a modern style with classical influences. It dates to the early 20th century, and includes a boundary wall and gates. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings, and originally had flat roofs supporting a series of greenhouses, which are now probably modern replacements.
The building is two stories high and features a long, symmetrical façade divided into bays arranged as 1-4-3-4-1. The central and outer bays project forward. Pilasters are used to define the bays. The central bays are further emphasized with an ashlar centre-piece featuring channelled pilasters with wreathed capitals, a segmental pediment with modillions, and a stepped blocking course. The main entrance has paired doors with glazed panels and diagonal glazing, a detail echoed in the internal stairwell. The windows are predominantly paired 18-pane sash windows, with those in the central bays above the entrance being 12-pane. An ashlar cornice runs along the first floor. The bays to either side of the central block have similar ashlar cornices and brick blocking courses, and paired sash windows; those to the ground floor have gauged brick heads and ashlar keystones. The outer bays have a higher stepped blocking course and 4-window return elevations with paired 18-pane sash windows. A long wing at the rear left has an 8-window range with paired 12-pane sash windows. The rear elevation is partially obscured by later additions, but notable features include a large window illuminating the main staircase in the advanced central bay, and a tall window lighting the secondary staircase.
A low brick boundary wall with ashlar coping runs along the forecourt. It is punctuated by paired gate piers with stone cornices, linked by railings featuring art-deco detailing. Simpler paired piers and gates are located at the head of the steps.
Inside, the central lobby provides access to the main staircase and a spinal corridor that runs the length of the building at the rear. The building’s plan provides a series of offices and teaching rooms, with laboratories and lecture halls situated in the projecting wings. A secondary staircase is located close to the angle with the rear wing. The lobby has plaster-panelled walls and a plain barrel-vaulted ceiling, with a moulded architrave to the rear archway. The main staircase has a cast iron balustrade consisting of rectangular panels with a pattern of alternately diagonal and rectangular bracing. The secondary staircase has similar detailing, and a two-bay arcade to the landing. Some original internal details, such as deep moulded plaster cornices and six-panelled doors, remain, and further details may be concealed behind suspended ceilings.
